Dawn Monette is a Canadian contact juggler who does wonderful stuff on dawndreams.ca and her youtube profile. In 2006 she travelled from Canada to attend the first Ministry workshop in London. She has been a regular collaborator ever since, and is featured in our Canadian workshop series as well as the recent street performance clip with Ryan

Her first ever web-video (Have you seen it yet?) has racked up tens of thousands of views, and has given a voice to a sub-culture of contact jugglers who now profess that they too suffer from OCCJD (obsessive-compulsive-contact-juggling-disorder)

Mmmmmmmministry Berlin 2009…

Oh my god it was an amazing experience. we had people coming to us all the way from Australia and the United States… not to mention most of Western Europe being represented there. Such a large group of friendly, inspiring and interesting people helped to make the week in Berlin the huge success that it was.

Take 40 jugglers from all over the world, add in a twist of Jea9, a squeeze of Moon, a handful of Kelvin, A sprig of Colin and Ed, and then season with a pinch of Meg, and you end up with an official workshop of epic proportions. My brain is only just recovering, and I was one of the teachers! I hope the students will be able to come and give us their accounts soon too, but I think we melted their brains pretty bad…

Anyway, in the meantime whilst the we take the time to separate all the awesome moments that make up one amazing week in order to bring you a more coherent review, I’ll leave you hanging some more with the video trailer, sent to us today by Lhupo, who was commissioned by the Katakomben to film the event. Look out for an article in Kaskade magazine too…

Ministry Workshop – Contact Juggling in Canada 2009 : Official Release

I (Ryan Mellors) edited most of this series in the passenger seat while Dawn drove the car; admiring the scenery in between stops at Tim Hortons (where we would recharge on caffeine and latop power) and late-night diners. We drove 2000 miles through a slowly changing landscape, our car loaded with balls of all sizes, hoops, tetrahedrons, bendy sticks, half-spheres, blocks and a video camera. Our objective: build the community, find others like us and explore what this ‘contact juggling’ thing is all about. Shoot lots of video and get to Montreal without running out of money.

Thanks to all who came to the workshops and to all the supportive musicians who offered music for the project. Today marks the official release of the series; 9 short videos documenting the journey. So we’re giving you another chance. Yes, once again the Ministry of Manipulation are teaming up with the Jonglier Katakomben to give you their biggest workshop ever! Only this time it will be bigger, better, even more nutritious, and on the 6-10 April inclusive. Behind the scenes, manipulation ministers have been working hard to bring you over 30 hours allocated teaching time, more spaces, more in-depth and a wider range of workshops along with the extra curricular activities, which last year proved to be such a success.

Whether complete novice having only just picked up their first ball, or seasoned professional, we will fill your head with so much information, it’ll be close to exploding.

Alongside the all star MoMcast of Jea9, Colin and Ed to teach, we also have two special guest teachers. We have Das Supertalent that is Kelvin Kalvus (www.kelvin-kalvus.de) added to the line up, who proved to be such a hit last year, along with a special appearance by Moon. We’ve all been working hard to bring to you the best teaching, and the best techniques to help you get the most out of your manipulation.

Ministry Workshop: Berlin: The Aftermath

I guess a lot of people are wanting to know what happened, huh?

Well, My head is still reeling. The workshops were IMMENSE. Hmmm… Those capital letters aren’t big enough for that word…

Once again, the bar has been raised for Contact Juggling, Only this time, the ground is nowhere in sight. According to feedback given, the workshops were highly valuable and informative, with ALL skill levels involved, and everybody able to take away valuable knowledge and inspiration in order to keep busy for years to come. I have seen the future (of Contact Juggling) and it is good. I’m going to be keeping a close eye on several people… Close friendships were formed, and re-formed, with everybody leaving at the end of the 5days a little tired, loaded with information, and sore facial muscles from all the smiling.

Moon’s Multiball Teachings… well, he blew MY mind. And I thought I’d seen it all. Kelvin’s vast knowledge, experience, and amazing personality made his workshops extremely fun and valuable. Jeanine’s approach to bodyrolling, creating routines, and learning in general was greatly sought after and helped so many people get to grips with so much information. Colin’s dancing classes really helped students to think more about their body, and my isolation classes and small numbers multiball workshops helped students understand many fundamental ideas behind what we do, and then to take those ideas, and take them further, in any direction they chose. The only problem, was that there were too many activities to choose from each day!

As well as structured classes, there were more open, exploratory sessions for routine building, The use of the Katakomben for the duration, and far too much skill sharing and inspiring to shake several sticks, poi, balls, arms and indeed anything else we could get our hands on, at. ‘Extra Curricular Activities’ included trips to Berlin city centre, the Jewish Memorial, and various vietnamese and falafel restuarants, where civilians had no idea what to make of over 15 people walking along the streets, and travelling the trains with a ball sat on their heads… Some lovely filming was done by many people, with Moon making the official Ministry Berlin montage.

The katakomben were extremely pleased with how well their Largest and most popular workshop ever (!!!) panned out, that the management have already asked if we want to do another one…

In summary, We did good. Real good. Really, so much happened, that one post is not enough to do it justice. You’re gonna have to wait for the clips. Meanwhile, I need more sleep in order for my blown mind to heal…

We aim to teach good manipulation technique in a fashion that becomes fun and easy to digest for all levels of skill. Expect a lot of people to get rather good, rather quickly.

Ryan Mellors lead an official Contact Juggling and Manipulation workshop in Vienna on May 16th, 2007.

Workshop Description:

What is manipulation? How can we tell if an object is isolated, and how do we correct our technique? How can we build more complicated illusions? And how can we use these techniques in our performances?

This one day intensive workshop is aimed at all levels of jugglers/circus performers interested in developing new material with a single prop. Through group work and individual skill-builing, Ryan Mellors (Canada / England) will lead exercises in movement and manipulation, assisting the students in developing new material and giving them a basic foundation in movement techniques such as mime, bodypopping, liquid and other illusional movement styles.

Contact Juggling techniques will be taught with 1 ball and this will serve as the basis for a lot of the exercises, but students will be encouraged to move beyond the ball and integrate their own props into much of the workshop. Jugglers of all skill levels and dancers are invited to attend, and they are encouraged to bring whatever props they wish to develop material with.
